Edwin Strik (Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital):

"DB Heroes fits in perfectly with our care philosophy".

Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital (CWZ) is one of the 27 top clinical teaching hospitals in the Netherlands. The hospital has 28 medical specialisms, 8 paramedical departments and 5 departments like emergency room and ICU. Almost 4,000 employees and many volunteers provide personal care to the patients every day. DB Heroes is responsible for the data management of the hospital.

"Good health is our greatest asset", begins Edwin Strik IT manager at CWZ. "If something is wrong with it, it disrupts your whole life. Illness and physical discomfort make you insecure and dependent on others. What you need then is good care. Care that suits you and in which you remain in control. CWZ wants to excel in personal and valuable care close to home.

"The IT of CWZ has been brought together in the Medical Information Technology (MIT) division. This includes information management, medical technology and ICT. I am responsible for ICT, which is divided into ICT service, ICT operations and the Technical Application Management department. MIT consists of more than 110 FTEs. The ICT department consists of about 30 fte's. It shows that ICT is an important part of CWZ. IT is increasingly interwoven with the care process and is much more than supporting the care process. Innovation in healthcare is also increasingly digitally driven."

"The past period has of course been extremely busy for our colleagues. In the background, the various IT departments have supported the care providers as much as possible to do their work digitally as quickly, well and safely as possible. Colleagues in care do not need a home office and are at the bedside. Smart technology and support from MIT can help make their work faster and easier. For office workers, we provided extra (home) workplaces when needed. We had to organise a lot in a short period of time and therefore switch quickly. Fortunately, it all went well."

Complex digital landscape

"We have a complex digital landscape. In addition to our own IT staff, we use various specialists. Most applications have a link to our databases. DB Heroes is our database specialist. We have been working with them for over five years now. It started with renewing the architecture of our database environment. Currently, they manage our entire database environment with their service Team Extension. With Team Extension, we have strengthened our internal organisation and brought in high-quality knowledge. As a result, we are assured of high availability, performance and insight into our IT environment. Besides Team Extension, DB Heroes supports us with many data related questions. How to deal with logging and the criteria for our ISO-NEN certification? Or how can a software supplier make data available for its own software in a safe and responsible manner? Our technical application management department coordinates all this between DB Heroes and the various software suppliers."

Sparring partner

"The cooperation is excellent. DB Heroes is a good sparring partner. Our core business is providing excellent care. Our employees have also consciously chosen to work in healthcare. That is where their heart lies. This is also reflected in the IT. DB Heroes fits in perfectly with our care philosophy. They understand how things work in a hospital. They are flexible and able to change gear quickly. These are essential qualities, particularly in a dynamic environment such as a hospital.
